Optimise Your site for Search Engines
The first step to optimising your website for search engines is a pretty obvious one: Make sure you have a website! If you don’t, start there.
Once you’ve got that sorted out, there are quite a few things you can do to improve the visibility of your content on Google and other search engines. Some of them are quick wins (like getting HTTPS set up), while others take time and effort. But they all help! In this post, I’m going to share some tips for improving SEO so that more people will be able to find your site when they type those elusive keywords into Google or Bing.
Create a website with clear navigation
- A website that is easy to navigate will be more user-friendly.
- Make sure your website is responsive, which means it is designed for mobile devices as well as computers.
- Make sure your site has a clear structure and organization so users can easily find what they need without having to dig around in search of the right page or product.
Create a website that’s responsive to mobile devices
It’s no secret that mobile devices are used by a large percentage of web users, so it’s important to make sure your website is optimized for them.
Search engines have started to penalize sites that are not mobile-friendly because they consider them to be slow or difficult to use. Here are some steps you can take:
- Use a responsive design – A responsive design uses the same HTML code across multiple devices and resizes itself based on the screen size of the device being used. For example, if someone is viewing your site on their desktop computer with 1920×1080 resolution then your site will look like this: https://www.examplewebsitecom/desktop?width=1920&height=1080&color=#000000
If they change their resolution settings to 1024×768 then their browser window will automatically resize itself while still using the same HTML code (the images don’t get smaller), resulting in something similar looking like this: https://www.examplewebsitecom/mobile?width=1024&height=768&color=#000000

You can use a content delivery network (CDN) to deliver your website’s images, CSS, and JavaScript files from an edge location. CDNs do not have to be expensive—in fact, Google offers CDN services for free.
If you are using WordPress on your website and want to take advantage of the speed benefits offered by a CDN, consider installing W3 Total Cache or Hyper Cache. These plugins allow you to manage your site’s caching plugins and automatically minify CSS/JS files.
You should also make sure that all of your other components are optimized for search engine performance (SEO). For instance:
HTTPS is a ranking factor
HTTPS is required by Google, Mozilla, Apple, and Microsoft to be considered a modern web page. Security is important — if someone can steal your content or data then they can do bad stuff with it (like stealing credit card numbers or personal information). HTTPS provides encryption between the server hosting your website and users on the internet. It also helps prevent “man in the middle” attacks where someone could intercept traffic between you and your users to see what’s going on.
Make use of heading tags wisely
Use heading tags to break up the content on your pages into manageable chunks. Headings should be bold, and their size should be based on the importance of their subject matter:
- *Heading 1* is used for the main titles of webpages or sections of a page (i.e., “How To Optimize Your Website For Search Engines”)
- *Heading 2* is used for subheadings within a page (i.e., “How To Optimize Your Website For Search Engines”)
- *Heading 3* is used for subtitles (i.e., “How To Optimize Your Website For Search Engines”)
You can also create hierarchy with headings by using more than one level at a time:
Write great meta descriptions for clicking through from the SERP
The meta description is one of the most important elements of your website because it shows up in search results next to the link to your site. This means that a well-written meta description can drive click-throughs from a SERP listing.
Your meta descriptions should be specific and relevant to the user’s query, and compelling enough that they’ll want to click through and visit your page instead of another one on the SERP. Ideally, they should also be between 150 and 160 characters long (including spaces).
Keyword stuffing isn’t necessary; just make sure that whatever you write is going to get people interested enough to click through!
Start a blog
One of the best ways to optimize your website for search engines is to start a blog. Blogs are a great way to build your brand and generate traffic, but they have additional benefits as well. Blogging allows you to focus on optimizing for search engines because it forces you to create content regularly, which is something that every good SEO strategy should include.
When writing blog posts, make sure that they are high quality and provide value for your readers. This doesn’t just mean that they need to be well-written—it also means they need to answer questions people may have about whatever topic you’re covering in the post. If someone searches Google or Bing and finds an article on your site containing what appears like an accurate answer (and maybe even gives them some extra tips), this will improve both their experience with reading the article as well as their perception of what kind of company yours is based upon its knowledge about their needs/questions/etceteras!
If creating high-quality content isn’t something you can do yourself (or don’t want to do), try finding guest bloggers from elsewhere who already know how best practices go about doing so successfully within their own fields.”
Improve internal linking
When you optimize your website, you should also look at the internal linking structure of your site. Internal links are visible on any web page and help users navigate from one area of a website to another – improving user experience. By using keywords in the content of each page, including internal links and meta tags (which we’ll discuss later), you will improve how search engines see your site and determine its relevance when compared to other sites.
You can use email marketing campaigns by sending out weekly newsletters with relevant information about what’s happening on your business side. They’re great for keeping people informed about new products or services that are available for purchase online – which allows them to return through Google searches later down the road!
Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console
When you submit your sitemap to Google Search Console, they can see exactly how your site is structured and what pages are on it. This will help them understand the context of the information contained within each page of your website, as well as how they relate to each other.
By submitting a sitemap to Google Search Console, you’re telling them that you want them to crawl through every page on your website so they can find any broken links or outdated content. If there are any issues with any of these pages (like broken links), this will enable Google Search Console to report those errors back to you so that either:
- you can fix them yourself; or,
- if it’s too complicated for you alone, then you could hire someone who knows how search engines work (such as an SEO consultant)
Do keyword research properly
Before you get started on your optimization, you need to do some keyword research. This is a vital part of SEO that can improve your site’s performance—but it’s also an area where many people make mistakes. The most common mistake is using Google’s Keyword Planner tool and then overlooking the results or not taking them seriously enough.
The best way to approach keyword research is through third-party tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs (or another one of our favorite tools). These services have access to far more data than what you find from Google, so they can provide much more accurate results for every keyword search term out there. They also tell us how competitive each result is by providing metrics such as estimated monthly searches per keyword and competitiveness scores (how hard it would be for us to rank highly).
Link internally between related pages
It’s important to link to all of your pages, but it’s also important to link internally between related pages on your website.
This is referred to as internal linking, and while it won’t directly increase your rankings, it will help search engines understand what your site is about.
The more links you have on a page (and across the entire site), the better. It shows search engines that there are many other sites linking in and out of yours for a reason—because they’re relevant! You can use the same anchor text for internal links as you would for external ones: “click here”, “more info”, etc. Just make sure that when you’re placing an internal link, you’re linking back to something relevant—don’t just throw any old word into random places for no reason at all!
Link external websites and blogs in your niche/industry
- Link externally between other related websites and blogs in your niche/industry.
- Link from your homepage to the most important articles on your site.
- Link from one article to another article on your website that is related, but not necessarily directly about the topic of the first article.
Improving SEO takes effort
Improving your website’s search engine optimization (SEO) is an ongoing process. You’ll need to keep on top of it, and that means learning about new techniques and tools as they become available.
There are a lot of tools out there to help you improve your website’s SEO, but even if you use them all, your site’s ranking will still depend on how well it satisfies the needs of its target audience. If you don’t know what those needs are yet, try this simple exercise:
- Ask yourself why people would visit a particular page on your site (for example, “why do people want to read about our product?”). Then answer three questions:
- What problems does our product solve?
- How can we convince users that our product solves these problems?
- What assumptions do users make when they’re searching for information about similar products or services? These assumptions could include price range or delivery time frame before making their purchase decision

SEO is a long-term game, but with the right strategy, you can get your site to rank for the best keywords. And when it comes to SEO, there are no one-size-fits-all solutions. The best thing about SEO is that it’s flexible enough for anyone to use! Test out different techniques and see what works best for you and your website—but don’t forget about user experience either! If users find your pages too slow or difficult to navigate through, then even if they’re ranking well from an algorithmic standpoint (e.g., keyword density), their bounce rate could be high enough that Google sees them as less relevant than competitors who have better UX scores.
